How to Construct

Kitchen Cabinet Refacing One area in your home that will surely improve it's value and beautify it, is the kitchen. This series of articles is going to focus on techniques that will give you quick and fabulous results for refacing your kitchen cabinets.

What does Kitchen Refacing Cabinets involve?

You don't have to turn your kitchen into a construction zone to get a brand new look. Kitchen cabinet refacing has become a very popular method of remodeling a kitchen. Cabinet refacing involves removing your old, worn out and dingy doors and putting a veneer of some sort on the face frame. You can then put new doors and hardware that match your new finish. Most of the time, the inside of your cabinets is still serviceable, but the outside is very dirty, worn, and needing attention. With refacing, your cabinets look brand new (and in fact the doors and drawers are) but didn't require removing your old cabinets and installing new ones. You don't have to worry about wall paper, but most of the times it will help with your new look.

How long does Refacing take?

Cabinet refacing is fairly simple to do. There are a few basic tools that you need, and a couple that will make your job much easier. You basically need to decide on colors and woods. Remember, you can take this time to completely redo everything. I recommend you select your new cabinet look and wood (you can do solid colors as well) and find a wall treatment that coordinates with it. You can repaint or put wall paper up. I also recommend you do the new wall treatment first, before you do anything to the cabinets, unless you are replacing the counter top. If that is the case, the best series is to remove the countertop, paint or wall paper, reface the cabinets, and install your new top. This is the ideal scenario, but sometimes it is rough to do. After all, the kitchen is the most used room in the house. Refacing the cabinets can usually be accomplished in a 3-4 days if you can put 8 hours a day in. I have done a small kitchen in 2, but I have all the tools and a lot of experience. If you are replacing the counter top and have never done that before, plan on half a day for that, plus whatever you decide to do to the walls.
